Technology strategy and business strategy are not the same
Technology roadmap and strategy
One of the most persistent problems in technology leadership is the disconnect between what the technology team is building toward and what the business is trying to accomplish. Roadmaps that are built from within IT, without deep input from business leadership on what outcomes actually matter, tend to optimize for the wrong things. The most effective roadmaps start with business priorities and work backward to technology decisions, not the other way around. That requires the technology leader to be in the room where business strategy is set, not receiving a summary afterward.
