The first technology leadership hire is the most consequential
Technology leadership
When a company hires its first CTO or senior technology leader, it is making a decision that will shape its technology organization for years. Get the profile wrong and you end up with either an individual contributor in an executive role who cannot build a team, or a strategic leader without the technical depth to make credible decisions about architecture and talent. The right profile depends on what the company needs now and what it will need in 18 months, not what the job title typically means at another organization.
