More than half of CIOs cite staffing and skills shortages as a primary obstacle to delivering on strategic priorities. But the talent problem has two parts: finding people and keeping them. Engineering teams lose their best people first, and they lose them to organizations that offer clearer scope, better tools, more interesting work, and leadership that takes development seriously. For smaller companies competing against larger employers on compensation, the differentiator has to be the quality of the work environment and the clarity of the career path.
